How to Get Court Records
Start with Utah Xchange to pin down the court, the case number, the caption, and the filing you are after. Eligible public images run $1 per document. A courthouse CORIS terminal gives free index access where one is available, and the State Law Library offers another free terminal route. Remember, though, that Xchange is not certification.
- Record the exact case number, location, type, caption, and document date.
- Choose inspection, regular copy, certified copy, exemplified copy, audio, or transcript.
- Complete the statewide form or Tooele District Copy Request Form.
- Email the Third District route at 3rdtooeleteam@utcourts.gov, mail it, or present it at the correct counter.
- Call 435-833-8000 for district routing or 435-843-3230 for county justice records.
- Wait for the clerkâs current price when page count, postage, staff time, or retrieval is unknown.
Utah GRAMA governs government administrative records, but court case records answer to Rules of Judicial Administration 4-202.02 through 4-202.09 instead. So a county GRAMA request cannot change how a judicial record is classified.
Tooele Copy Form Fields
The March 2023 Tooele form gathers just enough data to find and deliver one specific product. For a criminal case, you must supply a case number or a birth date.
| Part | Required detail |
|---|---|
| Requester | Name, phone, address, city, state, ZIP, and email |
| Case | Type, number, parties, and required criminal identifier |
| Document | Name, regular/certified/exemplified choice, and quantity |
| Privacy | Original notarized proof for qualifying private material |
| Payment | Advance payment after the clerk identifies the charge |
The screen below comes from the official Utah request page.

The form confirms that inspection and copies are clerk services, not the same thing as downloading an Xchange image.
Types of Tooele County Court Records
A docket history pulls together the events, dates, parties, status, and public links. It sums up the case in one place. The filed document is the item itself, whether a pleading, motion, order, or judgment. A certified copy carries the clerk's authentication. An exemplified copy goes further, adding a higher form of authentication for a receiving authority. Hearing audio, though, is not a written transcript. Request only what you truly need. A judgment or order can often stand in for the whole file. Historical registers summarize proceedings, fees, and dispositions, while case files hold pleadings, exhibits, and orders.
Tooele Hearing Audio Requests
The local recording form wants a hearing date, judge, courtroom, your contact details, and a delivery choice. It also wants the caption and case number. Options include a mailed CD, pickup, FTR Player Plus, or an emailed MP3. Plan ahead. The form says to allow up to ten days. It also warns that recordings are destroyed after being held 60 days. The current statewide recording page uses updated product language. It lists $15 per half-day electronic recording, $10 FTR Cloud, $15 USB or disc, and actual postage. Ask the clerk which product and amount apply now. A transcript follows a separate process and price.
What a Court Record Contains
What is inside a file depends on the file itself and its classification. Even a public index does not make every attachment public.
| Case header | Court, location, caption, number, type, and filing date |
|---|---|
| Party record | Public names, roles, attorneys, and associations |
| Chronology | Filings, service, hearings, pleas, orders, disposition, and closing entries |
| Documents | Titles, dates, page counts, and public availability |
| Judgment | Entered code, date, text, and later satisfaction or appeal entries |
| Accounting | Entered costs, fines, payments, trust, revenue, and balances |
An accounting is not a certified payoff. Read the order and get clerk confirmation for a formal balance or a legal copy.
Tooele Records Response Timing
The statewide form allows up to ten business days for an ordinary response. Rule 4-202.06 permits an expedited request backed by a public benefit. Some things stretch the wait. These include complex classification review, staff-time estimates, postage, archives retrieval, and recording preparation. Keep a note of when you sent the request and when the court answered.
A delay is not a denial. Ask whether the issue is retrieval, cost, specificity, format, or authorization, then narrow the request if useful.
Rule 4-202.04 sets out the written review and classification route. When one part of a file is private, ask whether the public portion can still be inspected.
Certified Copies and Fees
The current statewide schedule, marked effective May 6, 2026, is presented differently from the dated local form. Confirm the charge before you pay.
| Product | Published amount |
|---|---|
| Inspection | No charge |
| Plain paper | $0.25 per page |
| Certified | $0.50 per page plus $4 per document |
| Exemplified | $0.50 per page plus $6 per document |
| Email/fax | $5 through ten pages, then $0.50 per added page |
| Actual postage |
Staff time is billed after the first 15 minutes, at rates that vary by staff role. Courts will not fax or email Xchange records. Buy those images through the portal's own purchase control.
Older Tooele County Court Records
Utah State Archives explains that records often sit at the court before transfer. The wait there runs about 50 years. Utah district records date from 1896, and territorial material runs from 1850 through 1895. A CORIS conversion does not guarantee a complete old history. When you contact staff, give the court level, Tooele County, the approximate year, the caption, and the case number if you know it. There is no Tooele-specific box or series number. So Archives or clerk staff have to identify the holdings for you.
Public Access and Sealed Records
Rules 4-202.02 and 4-202.03 sort records into public, private, and sealed classes. Juvenile delinquency and child-welfare files are not public through Xchange. Domestic, protective, medical, guardianship, fee-waiver, and victim-impact papers can be private, while adoption and expungement records are sealed examples.
Public history can coexist with a restricted document. A missing link or absent result does not prove the file never existed.
An authorized person should bring identification and any required notarized permission. Filers must redact protected data themselves; court staff will not redact a filing for its author.

Tooele Record Products Compared
A Tooele County court record request works best when it names the product. That matters more than naming just the case. The Xchange history is a public index of dates, parties, events, status, and links to available documents. A purchased Xchange image is a copy of an eligible public filing. But the clerk has not certified it. A certified judgment or order carries the clerk's authentication. An exemplified copy adds the higher form of authentication another authority sometimes requires.
| Need | Best source | Key limit |
|---|---|---|
| Review the public chronology | Xchange or courthouse terminal | Not the complete case file |
| Read one public filing | Xchange document link or clerk copy | Online link appears only when eligible |
| Obtain an authenticated order | Certified clerk copy | Name the exact document and quantity |
| Use higher authentication | Exemplified clerk copy | Confirm that the receiving authority requires it |
| Review a past hearing | Audio request or transcript process | Format, retention, access, and cost vary |
Ask the receiving office what it requires before you order. A certified docket is not always the same product as a certified judgment, and asking for the entire file can pile on needless page, staff, and postage charges.
Tooele Court Record Request Channels
Online access is one route among several for a Tooele County court record. A visitor can inspect an eligible record at the clerk counter that holds it. Or use a courthouse terminal where the court offers one. The statewide Request for Court Record form can go by mail. For a Tooele district matter, the Third District team takes requests by email. A phone call to the court will route a request and quote a current cost. Xchange supplies the public case history and any eligible images. MyCase serves a verified party on the case. Justice-court dockets sit with the county or municipal clerk for that court.

- For Tooele County Justice Court, use 435-843-3230 and confirm counter hours.
- For Stockton Justice Court, use its official page or 435-882-3877.
- For Grantsville, use the state directory and the Justice Center route.
- For Wendover, use the official venue table and 435-665-9000 directory lead.
- For juvenile records, stop the public search and ask authorized-access staff at 435-833-8040.
A mailed record request should carry a return address, a phone number or email. Add the court level, the case number, and the caption. Name the exact document and the copy type you want, plus a way to pay. Keep any original identity document out of the envelope unless the clerk asks for it. When a case does not appear online, ask the clerk where the docket lives. Ask when the entry was made. Ask whether older paper or CORIS data covers it, and how the record is classified.
Tooele Records Fees Beyond Copies
Copies are just one line in the fee picture. Under Utah's published schedule, the first 15 minutes of staff time cost nothing. After that, the rate depends on who does the work. Clerk time runs $15 per hour. Judicial assistant time is $21.20, and service desk technician time is $28.70. Managers bill at $37. Data analysts bill at $45, programmers at $100, and consultants at actual cost. So a wide date-range search or a multi-case request can easily outprice a single known document.
Ask for an estimate whenever page count, archive retrieval, private-record review, staff research, recording length, media, or postage is unclear. Wait for the clerk's quote before using an official payment route. Paying a case or citation does not buy a record. Buying a record does not change a case balance. Xchange's $1 public-document charge is separate as well. It stands apart from certification, staff time, mailing, and audio fees.
Control cost with detail. Supply the exact case, filing title, filing or hearing date, copy type, quantity, and delivery method before the clerk calculates the amount.
